THE PILIPINO HERO JOMARY TORRES CAME FROM NOTHING TO BECOME A BREAKOUT STAR

The Hero Jomary Torres Came From Nothing To Become A Breakout Star

This past August, Jomary “The Zamboanginian Fighter” Torres (2-0) shocked the world.
The little-known atomweight from the Philippines made her promotional debut against rising Thai star Rika “Tinydoll” Ishige at ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS. While the Thai has emerged as one of the most popular talents in Asia’s martial arts, Torres stole the spotlight that fateful night when she submitted Ishige in the second round of their exhilarating contest.
After the match, I was happy, but I did not know what to do. Do I celebrate or do I cry?” the Filipina recalls. “I was really surprised because I did not expect the outcome. It was the first stoppage of my career.”
Despite her fiery performance in the cage, the 21-year old from Dipolog City, Mindanao, is actually a shy, soft-spoken girl with sincere eyes. However, unknown to many, her mild-mannered demeanour hides the adversity she dealt with in her childhood.
Torres and her older brother were actually left under the care of their grandmother since they were infants.
Deprived of both parents, Torres still grew up to be a well-mannered lady, as her grandmother filled the void left by their absence. Despite not having a stable business as a source of income, her grandmother found ways to provide, such as picking up extra work at a school cafeteria. Her aunts also helped to raise the two children.
“My dad is in Zamboanga City, while my mom is in Basilan,” she reveals. “They each have their own families. Before, there was still anger in my heart because I did not know why they left, and why they broke up, but eventually, that anger disappeared.”
However, as a result of her circumstances, Torres was regularly picked on by some of her classmates.
“I was a really quiet girl, and I guess that enticed them to bully me even more,” she explains. However, that fire she shows in the cage today was already inherent back then. “I told them they should not mess with me because if I fought back, they would be sorry. I punched one and even earned a trip to the principal’s office.”
Despite the bullying, the abandonment from her parents, and the lack of any real role models, she still had her simple dreams.
“I really wanted to play basketball,” she quips. Having played in fiestas and for her school, she thought that she could eventually find a way to make a career out of her hobby. However, circumstances would not allow her to pursue that road.
“Instead of letting my grandmother work even more just to get me through college, I decided to stop going to school and find a job to help her out.”
At that time, a friend of her aunt’s in Taguig, Manila, was looking for someone to take care of their newborn child. Her aunt would call Torres, who did not hesitate to take the job.
During her time as a nanny, she met Ruel Catalan, who frequented a gym near the school where the child she took care of was studying. While waiting for the child to finish school, Torres swung by the gym to watch the action.
For three years, the usually-active Torres was contained in a job where she could not feed her competitive spirit, and could only envy them from the sidelines. Watching people get fit, all while satisfying that craving for competition through martial arts enticed her.
Fortunately, in 2015, Ruel introduced Torres to his brother, Rene Catalan, multiple-time wushu world champion and head coach of Catalan Fighting Systems.
“Coach Rene invited me and gave me an offer to consider. I tried training, and I have been there ever since,” she reveals. “I was a bit fat before. I only got fit here.”
Torres left her job as a nanny, and trained to become a full-time martial artist. With no martial arts background, it came as a shock for her when she was immediately booked for a match.
The Filipina took the nickname of “The Zamboanginian Fighter,” a simple nod to her hometown, and had her professional debut in August 2016 at a local show. She pulled off the unanimous decision victory, and from then, the Catalans knew they had a potential star on their hands.
“I trained for two months, and was surprised when I was told by my coach that I would be competing,” she says, “I took on the challenge so that I could experience a real match, and thankfully, I won.”
In May 2017, Torres was slated to make her ONE Championship debut against Thai superstar Rika “Tinydoll” Ishige at ONE: DYNASTY OF HEROES, but she was forced to back out of the contest. She could not apply for a passport because of a clerical error.
Fortunately, Coach Catalan helped get the matter resolved, and the bout was rescheduled for ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS. Despite feeling nervous in the moments leading up to her first international tilt, Torres was able to relax as soon as she stepped into the cage.
“My opponent was right in front of me, and all the people who supported me were all there,” she recalls. At that moment, she realized that she was not in a dream.
After a first round dominated by Ishige, Torres came back in the second with a mean right hook that dropped the Thai-Japanese atomweight.
“I got her with a good punch and I pounced,” she recalls. “I kept waiting for the ref to stop the bout, but he did not.” Torres then resorted to an unconventional rear-naked choke, which led to the then-undefeated “Tinydoll” to tap out
The victory shocked everyone in attendance, including Torres and her teammates.
“They asked me where that choke move came from, because it surprised them,” she says, “I told them I surprised myself, too!”
On Friday, 3 November, Torres will once again be under the spotlight, as she takes on Nita Dea (0-1) at ONE: HERO’S DREAM, which broadcasts live from the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium in Yangon.
While the 26-year-old Indonesian may not have much experience inside the cage, she is actually a very accomplished martial artist. Dea is a national wrestling champion and a two-time national sanda champion, who also a well-versed kickboxer with a 12-4 record in the discipline.
Still, Torres is riding a wave of momentum, and is confident she will win yet again.
“From what I saw, I think she is a striker,” she says. “She does not seem to hit the ground all that much. I am prepared to go toe-to-toe or take the match to the ground, wherever I think I have the advantage.”
“The Zamboanginian Fighter” is singularly focused on the task at hand, but she is not short on motivation. She is driven by making life better for her loved ones, and the people who have continuously supported her.

HEADLINES TO MEXICO CITY EARTHQUAKE LAST SEPT 20 ,2017

Trapped girl in Mexico earthquake rubble ‘not real

MEXICO CITY—A young girl supposedly trapped in the rubble of a Mexico City school toppled by a powerful quake this week never existed, officials said Thursday, denying accounts that had gripped all of Mexico and spurred international media attention.
“We are certain that she was not real,” Angel Enrique Sarmiento, a top officer in the Mexican marines, told reporters.
“We never had knowledge” of the version relating to her, he asserted.

Rescue efforts were still going on at the collapsed Enrique Rebsamen school brought down in Tuesday’s 7.1 earthquake, with some indications that a person, possibly an adult, might be alive inside.
But the sense of drama that had hung over the operation for two days — with round-the-clock media coverage and scores of volunteers working toward what they hoped would be a “miracle rescue” of the young girl — eased with the revelation.
‘Frida Sofia’
Details given by officials and rescue workers for two days had built up a detailed narrative about the child.
She had even been named, as “Frida Sofia,” although some elements differed, such as her age, which ranged from 6 to 12, and no one could locate her parents.
Workers had said they had seen her hand move in the rubble. Televisa reported she had spoken of other children near her. Rescuers had halted their tunneling work at times to listen for sounds of her and other potential survivors.
Authorities had reported that a slightly built civilian volunteer was able to squeeze into a narrow passage through the rubble so as to pass the girl oxygen and water through a tube.

Rescue coordinator Jose Luis Vergara had told Televisa: “We know that there is a child alive inside. What we do not know is how to reach her… without risking a collapse and putting rescuers in danger.”
He had said the girl spoke, managing to say “I’m very tired.”
A bitter blow
For many, young “Frida” was the human face of the quake disaster, which killed more than 270 people in Mexico. Rescuing such a vulnerable individual would have been a ray of hope for a country still trying to locate people in the rubble.
It would also have been welcomed as a rare bit of good news at the school, where 19 children died.
Learning that “Frida” never existed was a harsh blow for hundreds of volunteers working tirelessly at and near the mangled building, alongside soldiers and police.
“I was completely sure that there was a girl under the rubble. I was bringing smelling salts and oxygen tanks to the exact spot where the rescue workers said she was trapped,” said Aracely Suarez, a 23-year-old economics student whose face was reddened by the sun after two days working at the site.
“We were all giving everything we had to rescue that girl, all the children,” she told AFP.
Rescue efforts
Sarmiento told Televisa all the children at the school had been accounted for.
“We have carried out a full count with the directors of the school and we are sure that all the children are either safe at home, in the hospital or unfortunately died,” he said.
“There are indications there may be an (adult) still alive in the rubble. There are traces of blood… as if the person had dragged him or herself and may still be alive,” he added.
Rescuers were still working on the assumption an adult survivor could be inside.
Early Thursday, an industrial crane on a truck was moved into place to lift part of the pancaked structure, which had been bolstered with wooden and metal beams to prevent it settling further

SEN.TRILLANES FILES RAPS TO MOCHA USON OVER FAKE NEWS SEPT 22,2017.

Trillanes files raps vs Mocha Uson over ‘fake news’

Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV and Presidential Communications Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson Inquirer file photos
Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV filed criminal and administrative charges against Presidential Communications Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson at the Ombudsman on Friday for spreading “fake news” about his supposed offshore bank accounts.
Trillanes had earlier warned that he would sue the entertainer-turned-public-official for libel as she posted photos on her social media account of his supposed bank accounts in Singapore.

President Rodrigo Duterte had echoed Uson’s claims but later admitted that he “invented” the information after Trillanes disproved the allegations by flying to Singapore and checking it with the banks allegedly involved.
Uson told Trillanes to Google the word “alleged,” which was included when she posted the details of the senator’s supposed hidden wealth.
She said that she would resign if Trillanes would win the case

PRESIDENT RODY DUTERTE DECLARED SEPTEMBER 21 NATIONAL DAY OF PROTEST 2017

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday declared Sept. 21 as a national day of protest.
“No, September 21 is not a holiday..

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday declared Sept. 21 as a national day of protest.
“No, September 21 is not a holiday. I have declared it as a day of protest,” he told reporters.
But the President said he would suspend government work and classes nationwide on that day.

“Walang trabaho, he added. Kung gusto yung taga-gobyerno, meron man niyan yung mga unyon, they should participate. Sabi kasi ng military pati yung rebels nila, the red army, come down here. I will not arrest you. But do not for the life of me, I am asking you, do not commit crime, no vandalism, no lahat kasi ang police pati ang army sa barracks lang. Ang makikita niyo diyan ang traffic lang.”
Sept. 21 marks the 45th anniversary of the declaration of martial law by President Ferdinand Marcos.
To mark that day, various groups will stage protests condemning the war on drugs and alleged human rights abuses under the Duterte administration.
Duterte made the announcement after visiting the wake of SPO3 Junior Hilario, a member of the Caloocan City Police Station who was killed last Friday during an operation against Jason dela Cruz, a suspected gang leader wanted on various charges, including trading in illegal drugs.

CATHOLIC PRIEST TERESITO "CHITO" SOGANUB ESCAPED AND TOLD THE BISHOP OF MARAWI ON MONDAY SEPT 18,2017

Catholic priest Teresito “Chito” Soganub told the bishop of Marawi on Monday

Catholic priest Teresito “Chito” Soganub told the bishop of Marawi on Monday that he and another hostage escaped from their Islamic State (IS)-inspired captors during heavy fighting with government forces, and were found and rescued by troops on Saturday.
President Rodrigo Duterte told reporters on Monday that the military rescued Soganub in a special operation that also led to the rescue of another hostage, Dansalan College teacher Lordbin Noblesa Acopio.
But Marawi Bishop Edwin de la PeƱa told reporters on Tuesday that he was able to talk to Soganub by phone on Monday morning while the vicar general of Marawi was on his way to Manila from Cagayan de Oro.

De la PeƱa said Soganub related to him “the facts of his escape” at past midnight of Sept. 17 near the Bato Ali mosque in Marawi.
“He said he escaped together with another hostage, a teacher from Dansalan College. They were fleeing an area of the Maute group, the military saw them, they were recognized and were rescued,” De la PeƱa said.
“That was all we talked about. I told him, ‘I don’t want to pressure you too much, I have all the time to talk to you,’”  De la PeƱa said.
The bishop added: “You can always combine escape and rescue.”
De la PeƱa expected to meet Soganub at military headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City on Tuesday afternoon.
The bishop said he was able to talk to Soganub after Col. Romeo Brawner, commander of Joint Task Force Marawi who was accompanying the priest to Manila, called him on his cell phone.
Report of escape
Soganub and Acopio were first reported to have escaped during fierce fighting between government troops and the terrorists near the Bato Ali mosque in Marawi City late on Saturday.

According to the military, they spotted the two captives and rescued them.
Soganub was one of dozens of civilians abducted by hundreds of gunmen from the Maute and Abu Sayyaf terror groups who rampaged across Marawi and laid siege to the city on May 23.
Mr. Duterte on Monday dismissed suggestions that the priest was released after back-channel talks with the terrorists.
He said Soganub was “liberated through a special operation.”
As to claims that the priest was forced to convert to Islam during his captivity, De la PeƱa said Soganub remained a Catholic priest to the Church.
“We do not have any confirmation about that and there is no compulsion in religion if there’s something like that … It is within the context of the war in Marawi,” he said.
He remains a Catholic priest
“It doesn’t have any significance, it doesn’t mean anything to us. He remains a Catholic priest,” he added.
The claim that Soganub had converted to Islam came from Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Assemblyman Zia Alonto Adiong.
Adiong said Soganub was forced to convert by his captors.
But even if it was true that Soganub had been forced to convert to Islam, De la PeƱa said “there is no substance to it if you are under duress.”
The prelate added that one must put oneself in Soganub’s position, because “it could be difficult to decide one way or the other when you are forced.”
“You can’t consider that. There’s no substance to it if you’re under duress. You can’t give your full consent. That is what religion is all about. Whatever it is, true or not, it doesn’t hold any water,” he said.
The prelate said Soganub, the vicar general of Marawi, remained under the Church’s care.
“At any moment we have not abandoned him. We continue to pray for him,” he said.
Asked if he was aware of any talks or payment for the release of Soganub, De la PeƱa said he hadn’t heard anything of the sort.
Other hostages
He said the Church was not fully happy despite Soganub’s escape because there were still many hostages held by the terrorists and thousands of people  displaced by the fighting remained in evacuation centers.
“We are hopeful that his (Soganub’s) release is just the first step, and will be followed by the rescue of the other hostages, many of them women. We are hopeful that soon the war will be over and that the Maranaos can begin to go back home, rebuild their lives and rehabilitate their city,” De la PeƱa said.

SEN. ANTONIO TRILLANES IV BANK ACCOUNT IN SINGAPORE DENIED SEPT 20,2017

TRILLANES BANK ACCOUNT IN SIGAPORE  DENIED

Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV said on Tuesday he had proven that he had no bank accounts in Singapore after visiting the city-state, debunking claims of President Rodrigo Duterte.
Trillanes went to Singapore to visit two banks and to inquire whether there were accounts under his name in the DBS Bank Alexandra branch and the Hongkong Shanghai Bank Raffles branch.
On Tuesday night, Mr. Duterte said Trillanes used the “wrong” bank account number when he checked with DBS Bank in Singapore.

He said the senator used the incorrect account No. 1780-00296-01-2 when the actual account No. was 1178-000281-60-2.
The President said he deliberately gave the wrong account number that Trillanes used to “trick” him.
“He used the wrong one, (which lacked) some numbers I had really removed. That was what came out. (So, the bank said) there was no such account,” Mr. Duterte said in a live interview with broadcaster Erwin Tulfo on government-run PTV 4.
“He used the fake one. I just thought that I should remove some of the numbers so that I could catch him. I invented it,” the President said.
He said the correct bank account number came from a foreign government that was “angry” with Trillanes.
Responding to Mr. Duterte’s remarks, Trillanes said:  “It’s a good thing he admitted he was a liar. To begin with, he won based on propaganda and lies. I hope people would now realize that they were fooled and continue to be fooled by  Duterte.”
Based on documents provided in the blogs of Tulfo, Assistant Press Secretary Mocha Uson and the Davao Breaking News website, Trillanes was supposed to have 12 offshore bank accounts, two of which were in Singapore.
At DBS, Trillanes was supposed to have S$193,850 as of Aug. 17, and at the Hongkong Shanghai Bank, S$278,300 as of Aug. 30.

But the senator, in a statement, said bank officials in DBS told him that he had no bank account with them.
“No such bank accounts exist,” Trillanes quoted the bank teller as telling him when he showed his passport and two bank accounts that Uson and the others had claimed he owned.
This was the same answer given to him by the teller when Trillanes inquired whether there were bank accounts under the names of Antonio F. Trillanes IV or Antonio F. Trillanes “either existing or closed accounts, and whether single or joint accounts in the bank.”
The senator said he and a media group that covered his Singapore trip found no Hongkong Shanghai Bank Raffles branch in Singapore.
So they went to HSBC (formerly Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corp.) in Raffles City Tower but did not find it.
He also checked whether there was an HSBC branch on Raffles Boulevard but just found an automated teller machine there.
“A quick check at the HSBC Singapore website showed there is no HSBC Raffles branch,” Trillanes said.
Trillanes said it was clear the President was lying and that the latter just made up the story that he had secret offshore bank accounts.
On Friday, the President, in discussing Trillanes’ supposed account at the DBS bank in Singapore, mentioned that it had been closed, along with another supposed account in Zurich.
“Our providers suggested that before closing his Zurich bank account and Singapore bank account—since all of these accounts are single accounts without codepositor—additionally the information that we provided has existing slips as evidence of these two accounts and were acknowledged to be in existence,” Mr. Duterte said on PTV 4.
Mr. Duterte came out with the allegation after the senator, his vocal critic since the 2016 election campaign, alleged that his son, Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte, belonged to a Chinese drug triad and supposedly had millions of pesos in his bank account.
During the campaign, Trillanes also claimed that Mr. Duterte had P2 billion in bank transactions.
Trillanes said the President made up the story that he had secret offshore bank accounts to destroy him for being his critic.
The senator said the President also wanted to divert attention from his son’s alleged involvement in the illegal drug shipment at the Bureau of Customs smuggling and to his “accusation that he has billions of pesos in deposits in his Bank of Philippines accounts.”
“Mr. President, you’re checkmate. Don’t try to make excuses. Just sign a (bank) waiver so that your loyalists would realize how corrupt you are,” Trillanes said.
The senator has signed waivers allowing the Office of the Ombudsman and the Anti-Money Laundering Council to look into the offshore bank accounts that he allegedly owns
